Teachers Singing was developed to give educators a voice in the world. In
January, 2004, in a rural area of Tanzania, East Africa, I created an Education
Forum for a group of teachers, parents, students and village council members.
They came together as a community to express their needs and desires for
the future of their village. One outcome of the Forum was that teachers
expressed what they needed to be successful. In follow up meetings with
them, it occurred to me that educators needed someone to listen to what
they had to say, and give them an opportunity to express concerns, share
values and grow as a community.
In Africa, both teachers and students
sing to bring forth joy and sadness. They join their voices in harmony
to express themselves. The whole concept of self-expression through song
is a very powerful metaphor for change. Thus, the idea for a platform
for teachers was created from this very simple concept. Joining voices,
teachers singing together for change, will shift the perception of education.
This vision will be accomplished by educators, coming together, one at
a time, until in unison, their song will be heard around the world.
